Tips For Working From Home

As we try our best to prevent the spread of COVID-19,

many people have been forced into working from home. For lots, this has been a stressful process that comes with a multitude of mixed emotions.

Although there are many positives to working from our homes, such as being able to create your own schedule, working from home can be hard on us both mentally and physically.

Here are a few tips and tricks provided to us by our friends over at Later for making working from home easier and more comfortable:

Set clear working hours and STICK to them!

When you’re working from home, it is essential to set a clear schedule for yourself that is easy to stick to. Even if you’re only working 10 hours a week from home, having time blocked off (also referred to as time blocking) each day for goals and tasks will make them easier to accomplish and hold you accountable for anything missed. When creating your schedule, be sure to include time for breaks and relaxation.

Turn your video ON during video calls

This seems like a no brainer, but the more people I talk to, the more I realize it is common for people to leave their cameras off during zoom calls. Although it may be uncomfortable for some to show their faces on camera, it is an important part of staying focused and engaged in whatever conversation is taking place on the call. It’s also a good excuse for getting out of your sweatpants!

Make time for social chats with co-workers

Staying connected to other coworkers outside of working hours is an excellent way to bond with the people you work with. It allows for the time spent together during working hours to be more enjoyable and motivating. It also fosters a better means of open communication between employees.

Go outdoors for some fresh air

When quarantine first hit and we were forced into isolation, I accidentally went 2 weeks without leaving the house. It can be so easy to overlook the importance of getting some fresh air. Since then I’ve made it a goal to go for at least a 20 minute walk a few times a week to get out of the house and clear my mind. Something so simple has improved my overall mood and efficiency at home.

Have a dedicated work space

Having a dedicated work space is essential when creating a work/life balance when working from home. It allows you to get into a working mindset and minimizes any distractions. Not everyone has the luxury of having an office area that is separated from the rest of the house. For those who are in smaller living spaces such as an apartment, finding a work space can be a struggle. Here are a few tips for making the search a little easier:

  • Do NOT work in your bedroom. Your bedroom should be a place for relaxing and winding down only!

  • Find a spot with a comfortable, yet supportive chair. (i.e. no couches, beds, or sitting on the floor)

  • Natural lighting helps keep your eyes from straining and your mind awake.

  • Set up a few items to make the space more aesthetically pleasing like photos, a desk plant, or some nice stationary!

Take breaks from screen time

When you're creating your schedule for the week, make sure to schedule breaks in between working to give your eyes and mind a break from continuously staring at a screen. Even a quick 20-30 minutes to make yourself a snack, go for a walk, meditate, sneak a quick workout in, etc. can do wonders for your productivity.

Turn off notifications outside of working hours

When you’re done working for the day, commit to it. Turn off your notifications or just turn your phone off completely. Now is the time to spend time with your family, partner, or take some alone time to relax and unwind! It’s so important when you’re working from home to leave the previously talked about dedicated work space, and escape from the job.
